Posted by: Tyson Clayton
Sure it sounds crazy, but freezing a hard drive may actually work for you. I can never say the words "backup your drives" enough and it always seems like someone you know comes to you asking for help with a computer that won't function and sure enough many times it's a busted hard drive. Let me first say that if you don't backup your hard drive and you start to hear clicking and random noises coming from your drive PLEASE PLEASE backup anything you can immediately. If all warnings fail :) and you find yourself trying to access a drive that just won't function.

Go ahead and give the freeze a try.

Pop the drive out of your pc, place it in a zip lock bag to keep out condensation and put in the freezer for an hour or two. The drive may actually work like it's old self, but don't be fooled this working drive won't last long and will start to click again upon getting warm. Get what you can and if you need to seek professional help try one of many data recovery locations online. As always try this at your own risk no guarantees here.
